We are the bridge to generational success!
At PS 179, the Academy of Exploratory Arts, we embrace a culture where being present and intentional is at the core of everything we do. We believe that strong attendance, high academic expectations, mindfulness and integrity, in partnership with families and the community, helps develop a learning environment that allows us to educate the whole student; both academically and artistically, so that they can begin to contribute to, and uplift their community.
Engage in Learning

At our school, we are deeply committed to delivering a rigorous and engaging instructional program grounded in our core values of Presence, High Expectations, Integrity, Nurturing the Whole Child, and Service (PHINS).
Our curriculum includes EL Education for English Language Arts, UFLI for foundational phonics instruction, and Illustrative Mathematics for math. We believe all students deserve access to high-quality, relevant learning experiences that connect to the real world and prepare them for future success. We are also 1 of 89 schools with a Nest Program in partnership with NYU- Nest Support Project.
To ensure every student reaches proficiency in reading and math, we have implemented a daily WINN (What I Need Now) period, providing targeted support to close academic gaps and meet individual needs.
In alignment with our commitment to nurturing the whole child, students also engage in a comprehensive program that includes science, social studies, physical education, health, theater, dance, and art. These opportunities promote creativity, critical thinking, and personal growth, ensuring every child thrives academically, socially, and emotionally.
Explore the Arts

We are proud to offer our students rich opportunities to explore the arts through engaging courses in theater, dance, and visual art. Our long-standing partnerships with prestigious organizations such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the New York City Ballet continue to enrich our programs.
This upcoming school year, we’re thrilled to launch a new collaboration with 92nd Street Y (92Y), bringing a comprehensive and dynamic arts curriculum to our students.
- Kindergarten & 1st Grade will explore musical theater and creative movement.
- Grades 2 & 3 will focus on dance.
- Grades 3 & 4 will begin their journey into music education.
We’re also excited to introduce two new community events: our very first STEAM Expo and an Art Show, celebrating creativity across disciplines.
In addition, our newly formed school chorus will be partnering with American Young Voices, giving students the opportunity to perform as part of a national initiative.
Elevate the Community

At the heart of our work is a strong belief in the home-school partnership. Guided by our core values: Presence, High Expectations, Integrity, Nurturing the Whole Child, and Service (PHINS) we actively foster meaningful connections with families to support every child’s growth.
Through collaboration with trusted community-based organizations such as East Side House (ESH), United Way of NYC, and Shiloh, we embrace a whole-family approach that empowers caregivers and strengthens the support system around each student ensuring they arrive at school ready to thrive. We are proud to offer a farm-to-table program, after school programs, on-site dental services and a plethora of resources to our families.
